Veneer can be produced from logs in a number of ways, the most important of which is the cutting method: Rotary Cutting or Slicing.
Rotary stripping
When peeling the log by rotation, place its entire length in the middle of the lathe and turn it continuously with a sharp knife. Much like unrolling a roll of toilet paper, and much like unrolling a roll of toilet paper, the rotational peeling process follows the tree's growth rings, resulting in bold, irregular marks.
Because of its width, the rotary cut veneer is usually trimmed to accommodate and eliminate any defects. Due to its high productivity, this cutting process is very cost effective.
Slice
When making decorative wood veneers and cutting, slicing is the preferred method. The most popular styles are the quarter and Crown, but there are countless variations to choose from, limited only by your imagination.
Logs must first be cut into quarters and then sliced to make quarter-cut veneer. Place the quarter-length of wood on the stand so that the blade passes through the tree's rings at a vertical Angle. The result is veneer with stripes that may or may not be straight, depending on the type of wood.
This wood cutting method requires the use of larger diameter trees, has lower yields compared to other methods, and results in higher prices for quarter cut veneer.
Crown cutter
Crown cuts, also known as flat cuts or flat cuts, involve moving half a log up and down onto the knife. These pieces, called leaves, are sliced and arranged in sequential order.
This is a common slicing technique used in veneer production, usually resulting in a straight grain with a cathedral pattern, also known as a crown.
Semicircular slice
Other methods of making veneer include semicircular slicing (which is a variant of rotary rotary slicing) and split slicing (which involves slicing a log at a small Angle). When cutting oak, this method is mainly used to reduce the visibility of myeloid ray features.
