The latest customs data reveals that China's timber import volume reached 4.029 million cubic meters in August 2025, with a total value of $818 million. Compared to July, both volume and value decreased significantly, dropping by 13.4% and 15.3% respectively.
The year-on-year comparison with August 2024 shows an even more pronounced downward trend: import volume fell by 20.2%, while import value declined by 23.6%. This marks the sixth consecutive month of decline in timber imports compared to the same period in the previous year.
This sustained contraction suggests shifting domestic demand dynamics, potentially influenced by factors such as the real estate market, environmental policies, and the global economic climate. Industry analysts suggest that the continued downturn in timber imports warrants close attention from related sectors, which may need to adapt their market strategies accordingly.
