Republic Of The Congo Timber Industry Update: Weak Okoume Demand, Tali Shows Resilience

Sep 29, 2025

Production and Logistics Overview
Recent rainfall in the Republic of the Congo's timber-producing regions has caused some disruptions to production; however, overall harvesting activities remain at normal levels. The rains have softened laterite roads, leading to slower truck transportation, but operations continue without major interruption. The main transport route to the Port of Douala remains open and operational. Port operations remain stable, with loading proceeding normally. Container availability is currently sufficient, and while some weather-related delays exist, the overall export process continues without significant disruption.

Diverging Market Demand
Demand for Okoume timber in Asian markets – particularly from China, the Philippines, and the Middle East – remains persistently weak. This low purchasing interest is creating inventory pressure for local mills. To mitigate operational challenges, some producers are turning to Southern European markets (especially Portugal and Italy), securing smaller contracts to maintain baseline activity.

In contrast, demand for Tali (also known as African Rosewood/Bubinga, scientific name Erythrophleum spp.) remains robust in Vietnam. Valued for its durability and decorative appeal, Tali continues to be a highlight in the current market, sustaining strong interest from the Vietnamese wood processing industry.

Industry Outlook
While Okoume faces short-term challenges, the steady demand for Tali provides crucial support to the Republic of the Congo's timber sector. Industry observers suggest that if economic recovery in Asia boosts timber imports, the Okoume market could gradually regain momentum. For now, businesses are advised to closely monitor weather-related impacts on logistics and adapt their market strategies flexibly to navigate the shifting regional demand patterns.
