Global Particleboard Capacity Growth 2023–2024

May 11, 2025

As of the end of 2023, the global annual production capacity of particleboard (excluding OSB) reached 118 million m³, with regions outside Europe and North America accounting for 49.914 million m³. Projected investments indicate that by 2024 and beyond, global capacity will rise to 125 million m³, with non-European and non-North American regions contributing 53.294 million m³.

While Europe continues to experience sluggish investment in particleboard production, other regions-particularly Asia-are witnessing significant growth. Countries such as India, China, and Thailand are driving capacity expansions to enhance efficiency and meet rising demand.

1. Asia: The Leading Growth Region

The Hamburg Symposium 2024 highlighted Asia-Pacific as the most dynamic region for particleboard capacity expansion, fueled by export demand and regional consumption, with India and Vietnam emerging as key players.

1) India

India's robust economic growth (7% GDP growth in 2024, projected 6.6% in 2025) is supporting its panel industry expansion.

  • Greenlam South is establishing a new plant in Andhra Pradesh with a 265,000 m³ annual capacity, equipped with Dieffenbacher's CPS+ continuous press, EVORIS digital platform, and integrated drying systems.
  • Merino Industries launched its first particleboard line in Gujarat (branded Fabwood) in October 2023, with a 330,000 m³ capacity. The €98 million project features technology from Dieffenbacher, Anthon, Pallmann, and other European suppliers. Merino aims to transform India from a particleboard importer to an exporter.
  • Century Plyboards is expanding in Tamil Nadu, with a delayed 240,000 m³ project expected by 2025.
  • Sudama Wood Panel is reportedly planning a new particleboard facility alongside its MDF operations in Uttarakhand.

2) Thailand

Thailand's panel industry remains resilient despite modest GDP growth (1.9% in 2023, 2.4% in 2024).

  • Egger Group acquired a 25.1% stake in Panel Plus, strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia.
  • Vanachai Group reported a 17% revenue increase in Q3 2024, driven by higher particleboard and MDF sales.
  • Metro-Ply Group commissioned a 450,000 m³ Surat Thani plant in 2023 (Siempelkamp ContiRoll® press) and plans to upgrade its Nonthaburi line for 25% higher output (220,000 m³).

3) Japan

  • ENboard launched a 350,000 m³ recycled-wood particleboard line in 2023 (Siempelkamp ContiRoll®), targeting the formaldehyde-free market.

4) China

China dominates global particleboard capacity (44% share), with rapid industry modernization.

  • 2023–2024 Expansions: 51 new lines added 1.549 million m³ capacity.
  • Key Players:

     · Luli Group (4.4 million m³, including OSB) operates six lines with Dieffenbacher presses and zero-added-formaldehyde technology.

     · Wanhua Group (4.03 million m³) utilizes straw-based materials and polyurethane adhesives.

     · Ningfeng Group (3 million m³) employs Italian and Chinese equipment for fully digitized production.

2. South America

Brazil's Dexco reported strong 2024 performance (18.1% sales growth YoY), while Berneck is upgrading its Santa Catarina plant (output to 2,700 m³/day). Ecuador's Aglomerados Cotopaxi has ordered machinery for a new particleboard line.

3. Oceania & Africa

  • Australia: Australian Panels is building a large-scale plant in Mount Gambier (Siempelkamp ContiRoll® press, 55.5 m).
  • Algeria: Ghamoud's 115,000 m³ project (Dieffenbacher) resumed progress in 2024 after COVID-19 delays.

Outlook

Asia-Pacific remains the epicenter of particleboard investment, driven by urbanization, furniture demand, and export opportunities. India and China lead in capacity growth, while South America and Africa show emerging potential.
