A new type of flame-retardant oriented strand board (OSB/2), designed for load-bearing applications, has recently passed a product appraisal in Beijing, with experts recognizing its technology as internationally leading. The appraisal committee consisted of specialists from several national research institutes and leading universities in the field of forestry and wood science.
The newly developed panel uses ammonium polyphosphate as the core flame retardant. Through advanced techniques such as ion exchange, self-assembly, and nano-compounding, a composite structure containing amine-based hyperbranched polymers and transition metal ions has been constructed on the surface of the board. Nano-metal oxides were also incorporated to enhance adsorption performance.
Thanks to a layered flame-retardant treatment process, the panel demonstrates outstanding performance in both fire resistance and mechanical strength. Independent third-party tests confirm that the material achieves a B1-grade flame retardancy rating according to the Chinese national standard GB/T 8624-2012.
The successful certification of this high-performance panel highlights the research team's achievements in technological innovation and industrial application of wood-based composites. Moving forward, the developing institution aims to continue focusing on functional wood composite materials, increasing R&D investment to further enhance product quality and performance. This effort is aligned with national and regional development goals, supporting the broader upgrade of the forestry industry toward greener, higher-value, and integrated solutions.
