European Panel Production Grows 2.7% in 2024, Boosting Woodworking Machinery Demand

Jul 14, 2025

Recently, the European Panel Federation (EPF) held its Annual General Meeting in Berlin, focusing on two core issues: raw material supply and industry regulation. The *EPF 2024-2025 Annual Report* released at the meeting revealed a significant recovery in Europe's panel industry, with total production increasing by 2.7% year-on-year in 2024 to reach 58.1 million cubic meters. This figure not only exceeded the 1.9% growth and 57.4 million cubic meter production volume forecasted during the Interzum exhibition in May but also successfully reversed the 6.2% decline seen in 2023.

Notable Performance Across Segments:

  • Particleboard: Production grew by 1.5% to 31.3 million cubic meters.
  • Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF): Increased by 1.9% to 11.3 million cubic meters.
  • Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Showed the most outstanding performance, surging by 5% to exceed 7.1 million cubic meters.

Challenges and Opportunities Coexist:
EPF Board Member Stefan Zinn pointed out that the panel industry is currently at a critical juncture of transformation. While wood, as a low-carbon material, contributes to environmental goals, achieving "zero emissions" in actual production remains a significant challenge. Additionally, a stable energy supply is crucial for maintaining business operations and competitiveness.

Clear Signs of Market Recovery:
EPF Managing Director Matti Rantanen disclosed in the report that the number of EU construction permits rose by 14% at the end of 2024 and maintained a 5% increase in early 2025. After a 20% decline in production from mid-2022 to late 2024, the furniture industry saw a slight year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2025. Currently, economic growth in the EU-27 is primarily driven by private consumption, while uncertainty in the construction sector is gradually diminishing. With improved housing affordability, rising incomes, and declining interest rates, the EU real estate market is reaching a pivotal turning point.

Industry Observations:
The current recovery in the panel industry presents new development opportunities for the woodworking machinery market. With increasing demand for capacity expansion and technological upgrades, European woodworking machinery orders are expected to experience a new wave of growth in 2025. Significant market demand is anticipated, particularly for OSB production equipment, intelligent production lines, and eco-friendly processing systems.

Market Outlook:
Industry analysts suggest that the recovery trend in Europe's panel industry is likely to continue into the second half of 2025. As the EU real estate market gradually rebounds and the furniture manufacturing sector stabilizes, the supporting woodworking machinery industry may enter a new development cycle. However, fluctuations in raw material prices and energy cost pressures remain ongoing risk factors that require close attention.
